It’s Day 1 of the Great Tank Sew Along!! I am so glad you have joined me! Today, we are talking about the Havana Tank Top, and I have a video to show you the top I made!

After we are finished talking about the Havana, I will also have a schedule for the other tanks I am sewing so you can watch for the day that covers the tank you are making. I also will have a list of links and resources for those who may be sewing a tank that I am not making during the sew along. If you haven’t grabbed the pattern that you need yet for the Sew Along, use code GreatTankSAL for 25% off your tank order!

Let’s Get Started – Supplies

For the Havana Tank, you will need woven fabric with a nice soft drape. You do not want anything uncomfortable or stiff. Quilting cotton will look more tent like and not flow as well next to your body, while a fabric like rayon challis, crepe, or chiffon will make your top flow really beautifully on you. I find it amazing how quilting cotton almost makes you look bigger, while flowier fabrics are more slimming!

You will also need some spray starch and an iron. I notice that when I starch a shifty woven fabric really well before sewing, the fabric tends to stiffen up enough that it is easier to work with (and cut straight!). This is definitely optional, but it always helps if I do this before beginning.

If you are doing adjustable straps on your tank, you will also need a 3/8 inch ring and slider set. You also may want a bias tape maker, but I do not use one in the video (because I couldn’t find it on the day that I videod my top!) Ha! I still love how my straps come out, so let me repeat, the bias tape maker is optional.

Are you ready to jump in? Here is the video of me sewing this top, and you can grab the pattern here! Let me know if you have any questions.

Don’t forget to find my post for today in the Greenstyle Facebook group and comment with your finished tank or any questions you may have. Also, if you liked my video on YouTube, give me a thumbs up!

Also, post a photo on Instagram of your finished tank that you made with any Greenstyle pattern and use the hashtag #sewallthetanks and tag and follow me @thesharonaguilar so I don’t miss your post and also tag and follow the Greenstyle account @greenstylecreations so that Angelyn doesn’t miss your post as well. For all the details of this sew along and how to win, see this post HERE.

The Schedule

This sew along will be slightly different than the other sew alongs I have hosted. It is the summer, and I feel like being a little less structured. I also want to #sewallthetanks so I couldn’t just limit myself to a sew along of only one pattern. So, even though it is a bit less structured, we still have a lot of fun stuff to cover! Here is the schedule so that you can plan ahead, or if you are reading this post at a later date, you can jump around to whichever post applies to you.

When my husband gets home from the office most days, he immediately changes out of his nice work clothes and puts on a pair of slouchy jogger shorts (or jogger pants if it is winter) and a T shirt (usually one that says something funny or has a sports team logo on it). Then, he grabs a baseball cap and is ready for the rest of the day. This is also usually his uniform when he has a day off.

He asked me all winter long to make him a pair of joggers, but I never quite got to it because the Greenstyle Brassie pattern that he wanted me to make him was designed for a curvier, more feminine figure. I really did not want to take the time to make the adjustments to meet his needs, and I also knew that Angelyn (the designer behind Greenstyle Patterns) had plans to design a joggers pattern that had a more masculine fit. So, I am sure you can guess how excited we both were when she put the pattern into testing last month!

The Iron Joggers – Pattern Details

The Iron Joggers has just released, and I made two versions of the pattern. Let’s talk about the pattern options first: the pattern comes with the option of slant or zippered front pockets, a zippered back pocket(s), and multiple inseam lengths. The inseams to choose from are 5, 7, 9, or 11 inch shorts, capris, cuffed full length joggers with either a 30, 32, or 34 inseam, and no cuff joggers. The waistband of the pattern requires 2 inch elastic and has a casing for a drawstring. The pattern also has the option for a slimmer or fuller calf.

On the shorts version that I made my husband, I used a black cotton spandex French terry from my stash. I suspect that I got it locally. It was only a yard, but with careful cutting, I was able to get this XL 7 inch inseam pair of shorts out of it! For this pair, I used 1/4 inch grommets and parachute cord for the drawstring (It was all they had at hobby lobby, and I was out of drawstring at home!)

I did slant pockets on both of his joggers because I knew he would also sleep in them, and he did not want zippers on the pairs he plans to wear to bed on some nights.

This camo pair is an earlier testing pair before a little extra room was added around the rise. He still loves this pair and wore it for the next three nights in a row after I made them. I think that is a great sign!

This pair also is the fuller calf option. I think I will try the narrower calf for him on his next pair to see how they compare.

I did not get a close up photo of this waistband. Instead of doing grommets on this one, I did buttonholes. For the drawstring, I cut a strip of fabric that was 1.5 inches wide and as long as the width of the fabric. I sewed the long end together and then turned it right side out with a safety pin.

The fabric that I used on this pair is a poly rayon blend French terry that I also bought locally. It is a lighter weight than the black French terry.

This pattern is very beginner friendly in my opinion. You can make this pattern with a standard sewing machine by using a stretch stitch on all of your seams. On the pockets, where you need to topstitch, you can use a twin needle or use the honeycomb stitch on your sewing machine if you want some extra detail.

Let’s talk about color. I am a huge fan of pink, but when I wear it, I usually try to tone it down with a cooler color like grey, black, white or blue.. BUT this past week, I must have been super happy and feeling all the summer vibes because I just couldn’t get mustard yellow and blush pink out of my head. Soo, of course, I sewed up a new work out outfit to see what I thought about wearing the two colors together, and I am excited to tell you all about the outfit and my thoughts on this color combo today.

Color Combo

Let’s get to the bottom line… I love these two colors together. Next, I want to make a mustard colored bottom and wear it with a pink top. Maybe my mustard bottoms should be a culottes or shorts pattern… Feel free to leave me some pattern recommendations if you have a favorite.

I use to think I looked naked when I wore light shades of yellow and pink so I avoided them. I would stick to colors that I felt contrasted well with my skin and didn’t make me look paler than I already was. Then, I turned 30, and then 35, and I started throwing all those theories out the window. I also have a wonderful friend, Aimee Wilson, who told me to just wear what I want and it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks. She is a smart woman (except how is does she not like pink?!)!

The Fabric

The PINK fabric that I used for my tights and sports bra is called Tuscan Red and is a Yoga Knit from The Styled Magnolia. Meagan, the owner sent me a yard to sew up, and of course, I was excited because I adore her yoga knit base. You can read my initial blogpost on the fabric here. I love her prints, but I needed some solids in my life as well to go with all the florals, stripes, and patterned clothes in my wardrobe.

Patterns

I made FOUR THINGS to show you in today’s post: (1) a nursing power sports bra, (2) a pair of Super G Tights, (3) a pair of Moxi compression shorts, (4) and an Xpress tank.

The Xpress tank was the quickest of all the items I made. It is one pattern piece and you only sew the shoulder seams! The rest is all hemming so you have to make sure that you use a fabric that you don’t mind hemming. I used a double brushed polyester for this particular tank. I love this top for when you are actively loosing or gaining weight because the back tie helps to make it very adjustable.

The Super G Tights also were pretty quick because I did the no pocket version. Here is a little secret for those who actually read blogposts and have made it this far – I don’t put elastic in the waistband of my tights!! I feel sacrilegious or something because everyone swears by it, but I notice I never wear the tights where I have put elastic in that seam. It hits me right at the most sensitive part of my stomach and just feels uncomfortable. I notice that I can get away without it if I (a) make the right size and grade for my calves and (b) use fabric with excellent recovery. The grading part is key because if your quads or calves fit in a different size than your hips, then it will pull the fabric down. The excellent recovery is also so important because a fabric needs to have strength to stay compressed when it is on your body, rather than relaxing and sliding down.

The Moxi Compression shorts have been on my list to make for some time. I have made a dozen or more pair of moxi shorts but had never made the compression short add on that is supposed to go underneath the shorts. I made my measured size for the hips and waistband but graded out at the legs in hopes that they don’t ride up, but alas they still do, and I think they aren’t as compressive as the pattern intended due to my giving the extra room for my legs.

Do you have tricks to keep your tight shorts from riding up when you walk or run?

Next, I made a Power Sports Bra with my tiny bits of scraps. I had to use some white I found in my scrap bin to complete the bra because I ran out of pink.

It’s Getting Hot Out HERE!

Ya’ll, the temps in Texas hit 101 today, and the heat of the day happened to be while I was out taking photos of this outfit… And I was in tight pants…. so I am sure you are thinking I was a hot mess, but I was fine. Granted I wasn’t working out while I was out there, but the temps were insane. I was actually really glad I was wearing long pants because my legs needed some protection from the sun, and this fabric breathed just fine. Since my shirt was double brushed poly, though, I lost it pretty quick. The Xpress tank is not a fitted tank so the airy nature of the pattern works fine in a fabric that is not as breathable, but I would not work out in a double brushed poly tank outside. I will save that one for the indoors where the air conditioner is fierce.

Resources

Patterns: All four patterns that I used were from Greenstyle Creations. Here is the link for the Power Sports Bra Sewing Pattern, the Xpress Tank Pattern, the Moxi Compression Shorts, and the Super G Tights. Also, note that the Moxi compression shorts are an add on for the Moxi shorts so they do not include a waistband. If you buy the pattern alone, you can use the waistband from your favorite tights pattern. Also, Greenstyle is having a HUGE SALE. Use coupon code FREEDOM2019 for 30% off your total purchase now through July 5th.

Fabric: The pink fabric is called Tuscan Red Yoga Knit and is in stock at The Styled Magnolia. The mustard and white striped double brushed poly came from Bow Button Fabric.

Notions: For the Power Sports Bra, I use bra cups and clear elastic from Amazon. I buy my nursing bra clips from Wawak. I used the 3/8 inch so I sewed one strap to the other and only fed the one strap through. If you want both straps fed through your clip, you need the 5/8 inch nursing clips.

This post may contain affiliate links, which means I receive a small compensation when you purchase via my link. This does not cost you anything, and I genuinely appreciate the support. Any and all opinions expressed are still my own. I also received the pink yoga fabric for free (after paying for shipping) so that I could sew it up and give the designer feedback about it. My mustard fabric came in a scrap box that I paid for a few months ago, but it was quite a deal!

I showed her all of the patterns that I had for swimsuits, and her favorite by far was the Striped Swallow Into the Blue pattern. She was so excited that I had time to make her one before we left, and I just love how cute this suit is on her!!

I made myself and my oldest daughter swimsuits from this pattern last year. You can read that blogpost and my review HERE.

My oldest daughter’s suit from last year still fits her wonderfully and is one of her favorites. I have lost weight, though, so mine no longer fits. Guess this means I will need to make another one ASAP!

The pattern has different options of ties that you can use for the front bodice. When my daughter was boogie boarding and playing, though, I would notice she would often take her tie off so that it wasn’t bothering her.

I felt great in them on vacation and knew I was keeping the most sensitive part of my skin safe from the intense Riviera Maya sun. They are also very quick sewing projects!

There is a FIRST Time for Everything

I had never owned a rash guard until I made my first one last month. After making that one, I really wanted to see whether it was a style I would actually wear before making another. It was a style I wanted to like on me since my arms and chest really do not need anymore sun exposure. You can find the initial post where I blogged about the Reagan Rash Guard HERE.

The great news is – I LOVED it. I felt so secure and happy in the sun. I went snorkeling for the first time, and I wasn’t constantly worried that I was going to burn and look like a lobster when we got back from the 3.5 hour excursion. I wore a hat, some sunglasses, and used as much sunscreen as I could, but ya’ll, I didn’t get burned AT ALL!! Usually, even with those precautions my arms and chest still are pink, but they weren’t! I was also closer to the equator than ever before so I am now sold on the need for a rash guard when swimming.

Fabric

This was my first time to sew with swim fabric from The Styled Magnolia. I have sewn with their athletic fabrics and just live in them so I bought this fabric last month when looking at their site for something else. This just fell in my cart because it was tropical and had pink – lots of pink.

I am so glad I sewed it up because this print is being RETIRED!!! I can’t believe it, but this print is up for preorder right now (through July 5), and she has no plans of bringing it back. It is being offered on lots of different fabric bases, so if sewing swim is not for you, pick your favorite fabric base, and she probably has it.

My Bottoms and Swim Top

The Reagan Rash Guard does not come with any support underneath or bottoms, so I am wearing it over a bikini. For underneath the rash guard, I am wearing my hot pink full coverage North Shore Swimsuit Top with a swim hook in the back. It has really great support with the cups I added. I think The Styled Magnolia swim is pretty opaque because my top isn’t obvious underneath either.

For my bottoms, I made the North Shore Swimsuit Scoop Bottoms. I made this pair not reversible so that they have swim lining on the inside, rather than a different fabric. They are seriously the quickest bottoms to make.

I just can’t get enough of the Athletic Brushed Polyester from The Styled Magnolia! When I arrived home from vacation about a week ago, I was met with a package loaded with 2 stunning florals and a solid and am excited to show you the project that I made with one of them.

I made a pair of Super G shorts, a (nursing) strappy Power Sports Bra, and a pair of Inspire tights. Whew! Yes, I got all of this out of a little more than a yard (I noticed she cut generously, and I needed every extra inch I was sent!)

Shortie Super G Tights

On my shortie Super Gs, I cut the pattern piece off at 5 inches below the crotch and adjusted my gusset and pocket pieces accordingly. I also lined the gusset so that all my inseam seams are enclosed.

I really love this length for the summer. When I finished taking photos, I played a game of tennis with my husband, and my pockets were plenty big and deep to stuff tennis balls in.

For my lower pocket fabric, I used ombre striped yoga knit that was left over from a pair of tights that I blogged about HERE.

I LOVE these fabrics together. I knew I loved a good stripe/floral raglan (you can see my fave such raglan in this blogpost), and now, I can say I absolutely love a good floral/stripe pair of work out shorts.

Power Sports Bra

I wear power sports bras ALL THE TIME. I am not exaggerating when I say that I DO NOT have enough, though. They are (a) nursing bras that are (b) comfy to wear and (c) that I also can work out in and (d) that I make just using scraps from every work out tight I make. If you haven’t made one yet, you really need to try this pattern.

The strappy back option in the pattern is probably my favorite, but the pattern also has a racerback and U back option as well.

I made a size 28D. It has a really wide range of band sizes and cup sizes, which is so perfect for those of us who don’t fit traditional XS, S, M, L, XL sports bras.

Inspire Tights

The Greenstyle Inspire Tights are my quick go to leggings pattern when I want a pair of tights that can work as just every day leggings and also for working out. I think I go on and on about them too much, but I have to say, “These are my jam!”

I am at the very bottom of the measurement range for my size and am starting to get to the point where I should go down to the next size, but I really have no plans to. I am loving the comfort and ease right now! They are also just so perfect in this ABP!!

Two days before leaving for summer vacation, I started packing for 6 of the 7 people in my house (thankfully my husband packs for himself!). I noticed my middle child only had a few pairs of boxer briefs for the trip. I told him we needed to head to the store ASAP to buy some more.

He sweetly told me that he loves the underwear I make him the most. That just melted my heart. Doesn’t it feel so good to be appreciated?!? So, despite the millions of things I had planned on doing before we left, I cleared my schedule (kind of) and made him 3 pairs of underwear that night.

He tackled me with excitement when I showed them to him the next morning, and I couldn’t be happier with his response.

When I asked him which boxers was his favorite so that I could pick the pattern to make him again, he showed me the boxers I had made him from the Walbrook boxer brief pattern from Greenstyle. I blogged about the pairs I made him last year HERE. I remeasured him, and he was definitely up an entire size!

I was able to get photos of 2 of the 3 pairs I made him, but I had a hard time getting photos of just him. His baby sister kept running up and tackling him and then posing for the camera. She is almost 18 months and already seems to enjoy getting her photo taken.

Pattern Options

The Walbrook Boxer Brief has two rises. I made him the lower rise option on both briefs, but the one with exposed elastic sits higher on him since I am not turning the elastic under when I top stitch my elastic.

The pattern also has the option of two different lengths. I made him the longer length on all of his briefs this time.

The pattern also includes a gusset and the fly part of the brief can have a non functioning or functioning fly. I used the nonfunctioning fly option in the pattern because I love that it can easily be made with enclosed seams so that it is nice and comfortable against him.

One of the staples in my son’s closet is a nice and comfortable pair of basketball shorts. In the hot days of summer, they keep him cool, and he can run all around and stay active.

For today’s blogpost, I am sharing with you the latest pattern by Ellie and Mac – the Kids’ Be Active Shorts pattern.

Be Active Shorts

I was a pattern tester this past month for the Be Active Shorts. I was really excited to test this pattern because I have lots of athletic scraps to use up, and it only took me about an hour to make a pair. It was definitely worth it for how happy he was to get them!

I made him a size 7, which is his measured size.

Elastic Waistband

The pattern has you sew 3 casings in the waistband, and then, you insert 3/8 inch elastic into each casing.

To get the most comfortable elastic waistband, do not use the suggested waistband elastic measurement in the pattern but rather measure where the shorts sit on the child’s waist and subtract 2 inches from that measurement (so not the natural waist but where the pants are worn).

He was so excited about his shorts. He plays a lot of ball with his brother and dad so they were just perfect for him.

If I make these in the future, I plan to add buttonholes and a drawstring for them, and maybe pockets. The pattern does not include either, but I think they will really bring it up a notch (but also make it take longer to make a pair!).

Day 4: Catch Up Day

Let’s Get Started!! Today we will sew our top. If you are making View A, you will also connect your top to your bottoms.

I have 4 different tops that I have sewn on video for you to watch. This pattern has a multitude of combinations that can be made, so I might not have sewn the EXACT combo of choices that you have made for your top. Having said, that I have made each option, so between all 4 videos, you can watch the parts that apply to the top you are sewing!

The options in this pattern are all pretty interchangeable. For example, I did the strappy front on the Deep V and the Tie Front on the Full Coverage. You can totally do the Tie Front on the Deep V or the Strappy front on the Full Coverage. So do not let the options I chose trip you up.

I also do not have it on video how to do the tie back, but the exact same sewing method as used to sew the halter ties is used on the tie back (you would just use pattern piece 9 for the halter ties that go behind your neck and pattern piece 10 for the ties that go in the middle of your back). If you want to see how the behind the back ties are sewn, watch the video on one of the halter backs where the halter ties are demonstrated.

Now let’s get into the videos. You can watch the four tops I have sewn in the following videos:

(1) Deep V FRONT with Pullover Halter BACK

(2) Deep V Strappy FRONT with a Pullover U BACK

(3) Full Coverage FRONT with a U Swim Hook U BACK

(4) Full Coverage Tie FRONT with a Swim Hook Halter Back

If you are making View A, HERE is the video for connecting your top to your View A bottoms.

I am leaving for a summer vacation to the beach soon and am so excited to have some much needed fun and relaxation. Of course, in my usual seamstress style, I made a massive list of everything I possibly wanted to make and wear while on my trip. I hope I can finish it all before we head out.

I am so excited to share with you two new outfits that I have made so far that I think are going to be perfect.

Have you noticed that it is the summer of the romper? With every romper/jumpsuit that I see, I just can’t get over how adorable they are, but then… I quickly think of the logistics of holding a baby or babywearing and a romper when I need to break for the restroom… So, I have been looking for how to pull off the style in a more practical way.

My Faux Romper Patterns

Let’s talk about the patterns that I used.

For my bottoms, I used the Greenstyle Brassie joggers. The Brassie joggers are seriously the biggest work horse pattern in my wardrobe. I go to them for everything. Pajama pants, gym pants, regular pants, gym shorts, everyday shorts, maternity faux jeans. I have already blogged about them here and here.

My beloved Brassie pattern was recently updated to include layers, a deeper pocket and a zipper pocket option, an option for longer shorts, an extra higher rise, a different waistband, and a bit slimmer of a calf for the pants option. I am so excited about the update and can’t wait to slowly add each option into my wardrobe (because you know I will!).

I made the midrise view of the Brassies, and ended up needing to add an extra inch for my waistband to be tall enough to meet the bottom of my top. Next time that I make a romper with the Brassies, I will just use the high rise option included in the pattern.

For my top, I used the Clara Wrap Top. I made no adjustments to the pattern and was really happy with how well I think it worked!

Fabric

For fabric I used double brushed polyester from Sincerely Rylee. Since it is a printed fabric, the wrong side can peak out on my ties when I make a bow. If this bothers you, just use a solid fabric that doesn’t have an obvious wrong side.

If you use DBP or a similar fabric with not as tight of a recovery, try on your waistband before attaching it. Mine is on the looser side, which was not the case with other fabrics with better recovery. You may need to reduce the width of the band before attaching it to your pants. You can see that mine like to dip down some when I am moving around.

So, of course, I couldn’t make just one pair of Brassie joggers to wear to the beach…. I also had to make a pair in ponte that will go with every top in my suitcase.

My waistband is absolutely perfect in this ponte fabric. I can wear these all day, and they do not move, need elastic to stay up, or need a drawstring. I love a comfortable knit waistband!

I made the low rise option in the pattern on this pair.

And, then, I continued on with vacation sewing and made another top! After participating in Me Made May this year (a challenge where I wore at least one me made item every day throughout the month of May), I realized how much I am gravitating towards my yellow tops. So, I thought a striped yellow top was just what I needed.

The pattern I used for my tank is the Greenstyle Tie Back tank, but look, it has no tie in the back! I used this quick and fun hack posted by Sewing with Sarah, you can find it here.
