Day 1 of the Waimea Sew Along is here! I am so excited that you have joined me! We will be sewing the Greenstyle Waimea Rash Guard and Swim Bottoms together over the next 6 days, and I think we are going to have a lot of fun and have some awesome swimwear (or athletic tops!) when it is all over. Each day will have it’s own task, videos, and instructions. I will also be available to answer any questions you may have!
Here is the schedule:
- Day 0 – Get Supplies
- Day 1 – YOU ARE HERE – Select your size, cut out pattern pieces, and cut out your fabric
- Day 2 – Sew Bottoms
- Day 3 – Finish Bottoms + Bottom Hacks
- Day 4 – Sew the Rash Guard Front and Back, Sew the Sleeve
- Day 5 – Sew the Side Seam, Hemming, and Bands
- Day 6 – Finish and Show Me What You Have Made!
Sound fun? Let’s get started! You can find today’s video HERE.
Our tasks for today are pretty simple, but very important!

Also, make sure to comment on my posts each day with your progress or any questions in the Greenstyle Creations Facebook group so you can be entered to win our prizes from our sponsors Greenstyle and Made Whimsy Fabric.

Bottoms – Sizing and Options
Before printing the bottoms, you will want to select your size. Measure around the fullest part of your butt and then use the Hip Measurement to select your size. You will also want to determine which options you want to make.
The options for the bottoms are:
- Mid or high rise.
- Fold over waistband or elastic waist.
The pattern is drafted to include a pocket, but on the video for Day 3, I will show you how to alternatively do a ruched side if you want to omit the pocket!
This photo shows all the different combos you can pick on the bottoms: top left is mid rise with the elastic waist, top right is mid rise with foldover waistband, bottom left is high rise with elastic waistband, and bottom right is high rise with the fold over waistband (not folded down, it can be adjusted by folding)
Top – Sizing and Options
On the Rash Guard, you will want to use your full bust measurement, waist, and hips to determine your size. If you fall into different measurements, use the full bust and then grade for waist and hips if necessary. If you grade, you will want to leave the curved seams alone and grade at the side seam. If your full bust measurement is more than 4 inches above your upper bust measurement, you may consider using a smaller size and doing an FBA. I will show measuring and grading on today’s video!
The options for the rash guard include:
- top length – cropped or full length
- sleeve length – cap, elbow, or long sleeves
- color blocking – solid front, solid back, color blocked front, or color blocked back. You can mix and match on these (like doing a color blocked front with a solid back)
I have not made every combo on the top yet, but here are a few of the options I have taken photos of. Left is elbow sleeves top length with color blocking on front and back, middle is long sleeve with front and back color blocking, and the right is the solid front and back with long sleeve in the short cropped length. I really want to try the longer crop length on my next version! It will be perfect as a work out top.
This pattern is awesome for using up scraps and coming up with a unique creation! Take time to sort through your fabric and pick what combo you love the most!
Video Support
Each day I have a video covering all the steps for that day. You can find the entire playlist HERE. You can go directly to today’s video HERE.
Resources for Full Bust Adjustments
If you are doing the princess seams version of this pattern, I would recommend doing this tutorial from Sew Over It to adjust the princes seam. If you are doing a solid front, I would recommend following this tutorial to adjust your front pattern piece.
