Hello fellow sewists! I am so excited to get started on my next sew along! I am sewing the Greenstyle Creations Waimea Rash Guard and Swim Bottoms! The Sew Along will begin on Tuesday, August 11th and end on Sunday, August 16th. Today’s post will help you get prepared for the event and give you all the details you need to be able join me next week!

Pattern and Fabric Discounts + Prizes

Use code WaimeaSALpattern for 25% off the Waimea Rash Guard and the Waimea Swim bottoms PATTERNS. Use code WaimeaSALfabric for 15% off the lightweight ABP, the Swift260, and the tricot FABRIC at Greenstyle Creations fabric site. Both discounts are available through August 16th. If you are ordering fabric and patterns from Greenstyle, you will need to check out separately to use the correct discount code on your order (one order for fabric and the other for patterns).

Use “get15off” for 15% off swim fabric and swim lining at Made Whimsy Fabric! Both shops ship very quickly, so if you need to order fabric to be prepared, you can do so this week! Made Whimsy has some beautiful prints and a lot of solids. I also really like the quality of their swim lining!

To participate in the sew along, you need to complete either a top or a bottom. If summer is coming to a close where you are, make the top to wear to the gym or as a long sleeved top for the colder months! If you make both patterns with me during the sew along, I will count that as two entries! One random winner who participates each day and finishes at least one item, will receive a free pattern from Greenstyle Creations as well as a fabric gift card to Made Whimsy fabric!!

Pattern Details

The Waimea Rash Guard is a fitted raglan top pattern with optional front and back figure flattering curved seam lines.

The pattern has a cropped length that I absolutely love for pulling over a bikini top.

Not only does the Waimea work well as a rash guard for swimming, it also can be made with athletic fabric for a nice sun shirt or an athletic top!

The sleeve lengths included in the pattern are cap, elbow, and long sleeved.

The Waimea swim bottoms have POCKETS. The pattern includes either a mid or high rise as well as a fold over yoga band or a one inch waistband with elastic.

Schedule

Fabric and Supplies

  1. Fabric. You will need stretch fabric for both the top and the bottoms. If you are planning to use it in the pool or at the beach, look for swim fabric or tricot that is rated for swim. For a sun shirt, I would check that the fabric has the SPF you need. If you want a nice gym shirt, any lighter weight athletic fabric would work!
  2. Lining. You will need swim lining for the bottoms. The top is unlined.
  3. Elastic. The bottoms require 3/8 inch swim elastic for the leg openings. I really like the swim elastic at The Fabric Fairy and Jo-ann. I have also seen it available at Sew Sassy. You will also need 1 inch swim elastic if you want to do the non-folder waistband option on the bottoms. I also recommend adding 1 inch elastic to the crop band if you plan to wear your crop for sports or lots of movement to keep the bottom from coming up when you move your arms. It is completely optional, though.
  4. Thread. I like to use Maxilock thread in my serger and also love Maxilock stretch thread in my loopers. For my regular sewing machine I use Guterman Mara thread.
  5. Needles. I use stretch needles in all my machines when sewing swimwear.
  6. Other supplies: Scissors, rotary cutter and mat, clips, sewing machine (serger and coverstitch are optional)

Note: The swim bottoms I am wearing with the blue/black rashguard are the North Shore scoop bottoms. The black/white bikini top I am wearing is the North Shore bikini halter top with a hook back. I did a full sew along for those patterns last summer. You can find that sew along HERE.
