I am so glad you are back and ready to sew with me for Day 3. Today, we will be covering steps 7 through 21 in the Pacific Pullover pattern. If you have just now joined me, here is the schedule and the post associated with each day:

Today will be our most involved day with the most advanced options available, unless you are making the simple neckband option on the pattern.  Don’t let the zippers, grommets, collars, etc. intimidate you, though. Take it one step at a time, and you will absolutely amaze yourself at what you can make (or at least I feel that way every time I sew a zipper into a knit!).

I have broken each option for today down into it’s own section. Here are your choices: (1) Neckband Option, (2) Zippered Collar Option, (3) Zippered Hood Option, and (4) Non-Zippered Hood Option. Find your section, and get started! Let me know if you have any questions or need help at any step of the way.

(1) Neckband Option

This is the easiest option available in the pattern and is very beginner friendly. It is also a great option if you are pressed for time or just want to check fit before you take time on the more advanced options.

For this option, you will want to follow steps 7 and 8 in the pattern.

My sew along video tutorial for this step is HERE.

(2) Zippered Collar Option

If you have purchased the Pacific Pullover prior to the sew along, make sure you have printed the most recent version. You can log into your Greenstyle account and check that you have downloaded the file with the April of 2019 date on it.

The main update in this file is the collar and front kangaroo pocket in all sizes and the shoulder seam in the XXS. Here is the most recent collar version:

Now that I have shown you mine, let’s get started sewing yours! The video for the zippered collar option can be watched HERE.

Here are the main points in this video: wonder tape, wonder tape, and more wonder tape. If you don’t like wonder tape, then substitute that word with pins. Lots of pins. Also, be sure to catch how I get my bottom rectangle to line up evenly and not give me troubles. The first few pullovers that I made involved lots of seam ripping, so learn from my mistakes!

I made several pullovers for the sew along and filmed each one while I made it. When I made my final video, I used whichever video clips showcased the steps the best so don’t worry about how the color of the pullover changes throughout the video 🙂 Also, please ask if you need any step to be more detailed or you aren’t sure what I am doing. (This is my first sew along so I am still learning how to accurately capture myself while sewing! I also don’t usually talk much while I sew, so that was a new concept as well!)

On my white pullover with black accents, I finished the inside of the zipper and just love this look. I shot a quick video to show how I did it that you can watch HERE. The only thing I missed showing on the video is at the end, I wrapped a strip of fabric that is 4 inches long around the bottom. This step can be done before you sew the edges of the binding down.

I also want to show you a fun modification that is not shown in my collar video that Melanie Burns showed me when I had already finished filming. She was having trouble getting her topstitching to look perfect on the collar so she did it a little different, and I think her collar turned out beautiful!

This is what Melanie did. She did not topstitch her zipper as instructed. Rather, after step 19, she sewed the short end of the inner collar to the outer collar right sides together, and then, she topstitched the zipper down. Next, she topstitched the collar down according to step 20 but only on the long edge. The cool thing about this trick is that you only have one row of topstitching at the top of your zipper showing on the outside when your collar is all the way zipped up.

(3) Zippered Hood Option

The hood with a zipper is probably my favorite option in this pattern! Yes, I really love wearing hoodies, but for some reason, my neck can feel sensitive when they have no zipper to give me some breathing room when I need it. The quarter zip pullover is the perfect solution to my hoodie woes, and I can’t wait to share with you how this pattern does it. I hope you love it as much as I do!

Watch the video HERE for the Day 3 zipped up hood option.

(4) Non-Zippered Hood Option

This is one of the options I did not get a chance to make and video for you, but it is a very easy adjustment to the pattern.

First, DO NOT do steps 9 and 10 in the pattern! DO NOT interface or cut open your front center. You will have no zipper to buy or measure and no interfacing!

Next, on Step 11, you do not need to interface the lower front of the hood. You only need to interface where your grommets or buttonholes will be for your drawstring.

Do Step 12. After Step 12, sew the lower front of the hood and the hood facing as indicated on page 17 variation 2V. You will want to sew your hood and hood facing to the neckline as directed in steps 13 and 14.

Skip Steps 15 – 19. Sew the hood facing to the outer edge of the hood as directed in step 20. Except – you will not need to fold your facing seam allowance back nor will you have the open edge. Rather, you will sew them together in one big continuous circle.

Do Step 21.

You can see how the grommets and the facing are done starting at 7:54 into the zippered hood video found HERE.

You are done!

Can this pattern be easily adjusted for a full zipper? If so, how would you do that?

I think it would be an easy adjustment! You will want to get a separating jacket zipper. The length of the zipper would be 2.5 inches + the length of the center front of the bodice pattern piece. Then, you would cut the bodice in half down the center front and install your zipper like a traditional jacket zipper, using the same instructions in the pattern for the hood or collar.

Sharon, I made three tops using your zipper insertion technique and my results are great, but all I see are the zipper teeth. Should I just stay stitch the “box” wider, like 1/4″ instead of 1/8″ from center front? Also have you ever added trim to the sides of the zipper like RTW?
