Let’s Get Started

Today’s task is to decide which options you want to make, print your pattern, cut out the pattern pieces, and cut out your fabric. You can find today’s YouTube video HERE.

Today’s video will show you how I remove for height and how I grade my pattern for thighs and calves. I also talk about fabric choice and briefly talk about styling joggers. I am using the Brassie joggers in my video, but the exact same would apply to the Iron Joggers. I also briefly talk about pattern options and the difference in the Brassie and the Iron joggers pattern in this video.

I do not cover making fit adjustments in today’s video. For fit adjustments, see p. 14 in the Brassie joggers pattern or p.16 in the Iron Joggers pattern. For more reference, I have found this guide and this guide helpful. If you have questions about anything that is not covered, feel free to send me a message or comment on my post today in the Greenstyle group, and I would love to try to help you!

Pattern Options

The Brassie joggers have three different rises: low, mid, and high. I used the midrise in the joggers that I made. If you want to see a comparison of each rise on the same person, Melanie wrote a very helpful comparison post HERE. The Iron Joggers have one rise that sits at the low waist.

The Brassie joggers were updated this May to include the option of the additional high rise. The pattern also was updated to include more room in the thigh and slimmer calves. Having the slimmer calf means that you will need to pay extra attention to how your calf measurement compares to the pattern so that it is not too fitted in that area for your particular shape.

As far as inseam options, the Brassies have the option of short or long length shorts, capri, 30 inch inseam with or without cuffs, and a 32 inch inseam without cuffs. The Iron Joggers have 5, 7, 9, 11 inch inseam shorts, capri, 30 inch inseam with cuffs, and 30, 32, or 34 inch inseam without cuffs..

Fit

The Iron joggers have a looser fit through the legs and are based on a size chart for a male figure. This means that if you are curvier that the Brassie joggers may be a better fit for you.

My husband is wearing the Iron joggers in this photo, and I am wearing the Brassies (with the calf graded out). I used the same fabric (in different colors) so you can see how different the two patterns intended fit are.

Deciding on Size

For my pants, I used my hip size to determine my starting point for what size to print for my pants. I used my waist measurement (measured at the natural waist) to decide which size to make for my waist measurement. For my thighs and calves, I graded based on comparing the largest part of my thigh and calf and comparing it to the pattern.

For my husband, I used his hip measurement (42 inches) and chose a size XL for his pants. His low waist, which is where the pants are intended to sit, is a 41.5, though. So, I used the 2XL waistband, and cut the 2 inch waist elastic at 40.5.

For my daughter’s pants, I used her full hip measurement to select her size. I removed length throughout the pattern since she is 10 and much shorter than the pattern is drafted for!

The Greenstyle Jogger Sew Along is coming!! I have been having so much fun sewing joggers over the past several weeks and catching all the fun on video for you. I wanted to give you a heads up today so you can prepare and have the supplies you need ready. I also have all the details on prizes and discounts!

I am a serious joggers fan. I have at least a dozen pairs of them and love to make them for my husband and daughter as well. I can dress them up, relax in them, or head to the gym. A big part of how they work in my closet really depends on styling, fabric choice, and fit.

The last time I blogged about the Brassie joggers I talked about styling. For this sew along, we are going to work on getting the fit right together and making joggers (for ourselves or a friend!) that will feel and look great to wear!

Mark Your Calender

I will have a video each day to show you that day’s tasks. On Day 1, I will talk more about fabric choice, the difference in the two patterns, and show you how I make my petite adjustments to the pattern. If you are short or ever need to grade patterns, this is the video you don’t want to miss.

Supplies

Knit fabric. You will need fabric with at least 25% stretch. See pattern for details on how much fabric to buy for the style and size you are making. Look for athletic brushed poly, supplex, French terry, sweatshirting, ponte, double brushed poly, or cotton lycra. I used the brushed athletic performance from Greenstyle for the purple and charcoal pairs, the supplex from The Styled Magnolia for my floral pair, and a cotton lycra for my daughter’s pair. I also made my husband a non-cuffed version with a thick sweatshirt fabric. You will need a lighterweight fabric with more spandex for the cuffs and waistband if you use a thick sweatshirt or French terry fabric.

Zippered pocket options only – You will need 1/4 yard of Lightweight woven fabric and 6 inch zippers (up to 4, depending on how many zippered pockets you plan to do). I used this zipper and cut it down to the size I needed. Wawak has the best zipper prices!

1/4 inch grommets, also known as eyelets. These are optional. I also show how to do buttonholes instead. I use this tool to set the grommets and use these grommets.

A drawstring or cording (also optional). I bought mine in the cording section at Joann.

Wonder tape and lightweight fusible interfacing.

Iron Joggers only: 2 inch wide waistband elastic the length of your low waist (where the pants are worn) minus 1 inch. I used this one and this one.

Sewing machine. You can sew the entire project on your sewing machine with a stretch needle and a stretch stitch. Optional: serger and coverstitch

Rotary cutter and mat, iron, ironing board, scissors, and clips or pins
