Happy Thanksgiving weekend friends! I am so thankful for you and for your support this year.

Have you been shopping Black Friday Sales? I have caught a few sales at some of my favorite fabric and pattern stores and now have a slew of plans for my sewing adventures in the new year. *can’t wait*

In this post, I have a list of the sales I have caught as well as show you some of my most recent make in today’s post.

The three pieces I am showing today are ones that I am planning to wear together – all throughout – the upcoming holiday season. I have been doing a lot of pattern testing lately, and it was really nice to just pull out patterns that I knew already fit great and use up some fabric I have wanted to add to my closet. I consider these “capsule” pieces because they will be easy to mix and match with other items I have already made.

For the activewear part of my outfit, I made a Greenstyle Power Sports Bra and Cavallo leggings. I have made this sports bra pattern so many times and wear these bras more than any other store bought or self made bra that I have!

I have learned to adjust the straps on the front of the bra after tacking down to the back first. This is so much easier when you don’t have someone to help you.

As for making the straps, in order to get them flat, I sew them using a zig zag at a 2.5 width and 2.5 length. I use 1/4 inch elastic, which means my elastic sits about 1/8 of an inch away from the raw edge. I also sew on the edge of the elastic that is closer to the raw edge. This is how that looks. In this photo the strap fabric is right sides together, folded longwise, and this elastic lays on the wrong side of one of the sides.

The unsewn sliver of elastic on the left (which is closer to the folded edge) pushes the seam of the elastic to the back of the strap. This is the back of my strap after I turn it right sides out using a safety pin.

Here are all my straps finished with the right sides showing.

Pretty straps, right? They lay nice and flat and don’t have any visible seams!

As for the Cavallos, they are currently the leggings pattern that I just can’t get enough of as well. You can watch my leggings comparison video here if you want to hear all my thoughts on the different Greenstyle leggings patterns. Do you notice that BIG pocket and NO INSEAM!

Fabric

Ok, now let’s talk about the fabric I used for my set. It is chipotle deluxe supplex from Greenstyle. I think the color is more aptly named Rust, Cinnamon, Gingerbread, or Fall Leaves. It is just so pretty and rich. It is not quite brown or orange but a beautiful marriage of the two. Maybe with even a hint of burgundy undertones. Either way, it is THE COLOR this fall (and will be for me the rest of this cold weather season!)

The deluxe supplex fabric base has a cottony feel, soft, warm feel (and not a slippery or slick feel like some athletics). I can wear it all day and it makes such a durable pair of leggings. I made my daughter a pair of Novello leggings in the black, and I am so happy with how they have held up to how hard she plays. (and it is also a really deep black and hasn’t faded!)

It has really firm recovery so it is more compressive and holds wonderfully on waistbands. I only used a 1/4 inch seam allowance on my tights instead of the recommended 3/8, though, and that makes them a little less compressive for all day wear.

I think I will wear this set with shades of black, pink, or cream as my top. The one I made for photos and keep wearing with it is a BONE color sweater knit.

This sweater knit is so chunky and warm. I got the fabric at Knitpop last Black Friday and had the goal of sewing it up before the next Black Friday rolled around. It may be slightly last minute, but I DID IT!

The pattern I used on my top is the Made for Mermaids Oaklynn. I blogged about this pattern last month here. The only adjustment I made is to the neckband. This fabric is more structured, has wonderful recovery, and has low stretch. The pattern neckband is too wide for fabric like this so I narrowed the neckband width to 1.5 finished so it doesn’t stand up.

Resources and SALES

Ok, sales are everywhere in the sewing community so if you have a project on your list, check each company because they are more than likely having some kind of sale. I usually use Black Friday as THE TIME to stock up! My list is definitely not exhaustive but this is just where I have either already shopped or am planning to shop from.

  1. Greenstyle is having a pattern sale. Use code BF35 for 35% off patterns. I used the Power Sports bra and Cavallos in this post.
  2. Made for Mermaids is having a 20% off Black Friday Sale. I used the Oaklynn for my sweater.
  3. Greenstyle Fabric – select fabrics are marked down, including the one I made my set out of – you can find that HERE.
  4. Knitpop is having an amazing sale! I have already shopped that one. I bought my sweater knit there.
  5. Jumping June Textiles is 35% off – I splurge once a year on their black friday sale because they have some amazing prints and stuff I just never see anywhere else. I already bought way too much from them this morning.
  6. The Styled Magnolia has 15% off retail. I LOVE their Athletic Brushed Polyester base.
  7. Other pattern companies not featured in this post that I couldn’t pass up this year: Megan Nielsen, Friday Pattern Co, Striped Swallow.
