Greenstyle Creations just released the Motion Shorts sewing pattern*! I sewed several pairs of shorts for my husband over the past several weeks, and I am so thrilled with how much he is wearing them.

The Motion shorts pattern* features front pockets, an optional back zippered pocket, a faux fly, and a back yolk for shaping. The pattern is drafted for stretch woven or knit fabrics with very low stretch. The waistband uses 1.5 elastic and has the option for a drawstring and casing. The inseam lengths on the pattern are 5, 7 and 9 inches. I made the 9 inch inseam for my husband. The pattern also has an optional liner.

I think these shorts make wonderful casual shorts, swim trunks, or athletic shorts! As far as fabric goes, I used this stretch woven from The Fabric Fairy, and they have several other colors as well as stretch boardshort that are perfect here. Other good sources for stretch woven are The Styled Magnolia, Spandex by the Yard, Joann, Discovery Fabrics, or Zenith and Quasar (they have a stretch boardshort sometimes on preorder).

Sewing Notes

The pattern is drafted for a masculine figure. I chose the size to sew based on his low hip (where he wears his pants) and his full hip (the biggest measurement around his hips). I did not need to grade for him. I have thought about making a pair for myself, but since my female figure is more curvy, my measurements fall into very different sizes. He fit squarely in one size so I did not need to adjust or grade the pattern for him.

I found each step very straight forward. I also made sure to iron and top stitch at each point and that really helped the shorts to look more professional. When I sewed the pockets, I used wonder tape to hold them in place when I put the main pocket onto the pocket lining and also made sure to match up all the notches on that step. I think this is the step that can be the easiest to mess up if you do not get everything lined up correctly. (messing up = gaping pockets or a side seam that doesn’t match up)

My husband has been working from home and is enjoying having several new pair of comfy shorts to wear! The Motion Shorts pattern* will be on sale through Sunday if you would like to pick up and make a pair or three too 🙂
