My favorite sewing challenge of the year has arrived!! The Greenstyle Creations Annual Fit Capsule challenge is a month long sewing event that started on Monday, and I have my first 3 pieces of my fit capsule for this year ready to show you. I posted all the details, sponsors, prizes, discounts, and fun that is planned HERE so you may want to start there for the specifics of this challenge if you have not already joined! Ok, let’s get started!
What is a Fit Capsule?
A fit capsule is a capsule wardrobe for your fitness clothes. A capsule wardrobe is just a concise way of saying that you have clothes that are really easy to mix and match. The purpose (at least for me!) is to not stand in my closet with hundreds of clothes that really don’t go together. I think it is really easy as a sewist to sew lots of fun one-off items, while on the other hand, it takes a little more discipline for me to sew the staples that are the true workhorses in my closet. Some people like to take a minimalist view of capsule wardrobes because if you have very versatile pieces in your closet, you really don’t need as many total pieces of clothes because you can make such a variety of outfits from the pieces you have.
When planning my fit capsule this year, I knew the first thing I needed to make before I even veered off into colors and prints is a solid black pair of leggings and a solid black sports bra. I think it is really crazy that I have so many leggings and bras in my closet, but I seriously have ZERO solid black bras. I also only have one pair of black leggings at the moment, and it is a size too big!
For my bra, I used the Greenstyle Power Sports bra pattern and for my leggings, I used the Greenstyle Inspire Tights pattern. I omitted the side seam by overlapping the pattern pieces at the side seam and making one big pattern piece for the legs.
The fabric I used is this Hi Gear Microloop Back Athletic Fabric from The Fabric Fairy. I LOVE how this fabric is nice, soft, and warm feeling on the inside and yet smooth and a little shiny on the outside. This is definitely a deep shade of black. Also, I would like for you to note that it has more stretch vertically than horizontally. My pants sit about 2 inches above my belly button in this fabric! Normally when I make this pattern, the waistband ends right at my belly button, but that extra vertical stretch causes them to sit higher.
I did not put elastic in my waistband. Instead, I used the free contoured waistband HERE. I have not had to pull my pants up at all. Seriously, these are as snug as a bug, and it is wonderful! I think it is not only due to the contoured waistband, but it is also because the extra vertical stretch in this fabric makes it easier to stretch over my butt and stay stretched over my butt. So, if you learned anything from my post today, let it be that vertical stretch is absolutely wonderful.
If you feel a little overwhelmed with where to start on your fit capsule. A solid black, navy, or charcoal pair of leggings is the best place. You will want to decide which color you want to be your base. Some people where a lot of black and some a lot of navy. I definitely wear a lot of black! The little black leggings is the quintessential workhorse in any girls closet, whether you work out or not! I seriously wished I had several pairs!
The next item for my capsule is a basic striped tee.
I ordered a yard of these heathered charcoal and ivory rayon spandex stripes from the Fabric Fairy, and it was just enough for a 3/4 length sleeve slouchy Studio to Street top. This fabric is such a nice quality and is probably the thickest rayon spandex I have ever felt. I am wearing my black power sports bra underneath, and it does not show through at all!
I am now regretting that I did not order more of this stripe because it would make a wonderful dress as well!
Are you joining in on the Fit Capsule Challenge? Not only is it great motivation to fill some holes in your athletic section of your closet, but it is also great motivation to get moving and stay active. I also just love the comradery and fun of sewing with a bunch of virtual friends who have the same hobby you do!

I love The Fabric Fairy’s fabrics. Would you say this particular fabric is not quite stretchy enough for Super Gs? (I made my first pair out of a Dri-flex fleece backed black fabric from TFF and it had 50% / 20% stretch. Wow. So snug! I love runnung in them but when I get home and sit down for breakfast, that lack of vertical stretch becomes very noticeable! So….to self…heed that 75/75% stretch recommendation!). Many many thanks for your helpful blog!

I think it may not be quite stretchy enough for Super G tights. It feels very compressive widthwise for Inspires, and they only require 50% 4-way stretch! Thank you for your sweet compliment!

Love this basic set so much! I have one pair of basic black leggings that fit and realize I would wear them twice a week if I washed them that often! Definitely might need another pair. 🙂 Yours look awesome! I also LOVE those stripes! One of my favorite fabrics.

I was surprised how much I love the stripes, and yes to all the black leggings. How do I not already have several pairs because I know I would wear them all the time!
