Let’s talk about color. I am a huge fan of pink, but when I wear it, I usually try to tone it down with a cooler color like grey, black, white or blue.. BUT this past week, I must have been super happy and feeling all the summer vibes because I just couldn’t get mustard yellow and blush pink out of my head. Soo, of course, I sewed up a new work out outfit to see what I thought about wearing the two colors together, and I am excited to tell you all about the outfit and my thoughts on this color combo today.

Color Combo

Let’s get to the bottom line… I love these two colors together. Next, I want to make a mustard colored bottom and wear it with a pink top. Maybe my mustard bottoms should be a culottes or shorts pattern… Feel free to leave me some pattern recommendations if you have a favorite.

I use to think I looked naked when I wore light shades of yellow and pink so I avoided them. I would stick to colors that I felt contrasted well with my skin and didn’t make me look paler than I already was. Then, I turned 30, and then 35, and I started throwing all those theories out the window. I also have a wonderful friend, Aimee Wilson, who told me to just wear what I want and it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks. She is a smart woman (except how is does she not like pink?!)!

The Fabric

The PINK fabric that I used for my tights and sports bra is called Tuscan Red and is a Yoga Knit from The Styled Magnolia. Meagan, the owner sent me a yard to sew up, and of course, I was excited because I adore her yoga knit base. You can read my initial blogpost on the fabric here. I love her prints, but I needed some solids in my life as well to go with all the florals, stripes, and patterned clothes in my wardrobe.

Patterns

I made FOUR THINGS to show you in today’s post: (1) a nursing power sports bra, (2) a pair of Super G Tights, (3) a pair of Moxi compression shorts, (4) and an Xpress tank.

The Xpress tank was the quickest of all the items I made. It is one pattern piece and you only sew the shoulder seams! The rest is all hemming so you have to make sure that you use a fabric that you don’t mind hemming. I used a double brushed polyester for this particular tank. I love this top for when you are actively loosing or gaining weight because the back tie helps to make it very adjustable.

The Super G Tights also were pretty quick because I did the no pocket version. Here is a little secret for those who actually read blogposts and have made it this far – I don’t put elastic in the waistband of my tights!! I feel sacrilegious or something because everyone swears by it, but I notice I never wear the tights where I have put elastic in that seam. It hits me right at the most sensitive part of my stomach and just feels uncomfortable. I notice that I can get away without it if I (a) make the right size and grade for my calves and (b) use fabric with excellent recovery. The grading part is key because if your quads or calves fit in a different size than your hips, then it will pull the fabric down. The excellent recovery is also so important because a fabric needs to have strength to stay compressed when it is on your body, rather than relaxing and sliding down.

The Moxi Compression shorts have been on my list to make for some time. I have made a dozen or more pair of moxi shorts but had never made the compression short add on that is supposed to go underneath the shorts. I made my measured size for the hips and waistband but graded out at the legs in hopes that they don’t ride up, but alas they still do, and I think they aren’t as compressive as the pattern intended due to my giving the extra room for my legs.

Do you have tricks to keep your tight shorts from riding up when you walk or run?

Next, I made a Power Sports Bra with my tiny bits of scraps. I had to use some white I found in my scrap bin to complete the bra because I ran out of pink.

I LOVE this bra. I have so many and wear them ALL THE TIME. You can read my other blogposts about this pattern HERE.

It’s Getting Hot Out HERE!

Ya’ll, the temps in Texas hit 101 today, and the heat of the day happened to be while I was out taking photos of this outfit… And I was in tight pants…. so I am sure you are thinking I was a hot mess, but I was fine. Granted I wasn’t working out while I was out there, but the temps were insane. I was actually really glad I was wearing long pants because my legs needed some protection from the sun, and this fabric breathed just fine. Since my shirt was double brushed poly, though, I lost it pretty quick. The Xpress tank is not a fitted tank so the airy nature of the pattern works fine in a fabric that is not as breathable, but I would not work out in a double brushed poly tank outside. I will save that one for the indoors where the air conditioner is fierce.

Resources

Patterns: All four patterns that I used were from Greenstyle Creations. Here is the link for the Power Sports Bra Sewing Pattern, the Xpress Tank Pattern, the Moxi Compression Shorts, and the Super G Tights. Also, note that the Moxi compression shorts are an add on for the Moxi shorts so they do not include a waistband. If you buy the pattern alone, you can use the waistband from your favorite tights pattern. Also, Greenstyle is having a HUGE SALE. Use coupon code FREEDOM2019 for 30% off your total purchase now through July 5th.

Fabric: The pink fabric is called Tuscan Red Yoga Knit and is in stock at The Styled Magnolia. The mustard and white striped double brushed poly came from Bow Button Fabric.

Notions: For the Power Sports Bra, I use bra cups and clear elastic from Amazon. I buy my nursing bra clips from Wawak. I used the 3/8 inch so I sewed one strap to the other and only fed the one strap through. If you want both straps fed through your clip, you need the 5/8 inch nursing clips.
